collaborative virtual environment February 2005

While at Clemson University I've been working with the Industrial Engineering department, Delta Airlines, and NASA to develop a networked virtual reality training simulator to train aircraft inspectors to locate and identify various aircraft defects during routine maintenance checks. Our software is fully networked, allowing inspection experts in one part of the world to train novices across the globe in real-time.

The software is also capable of interacting with eye-tracking equipment built into the HMD. The eye tracking equipment can be used as both as a training and verification tool.

The CVE is capable of displaying arbitrary scenarios. Most of the world's parameters are changeable at run-time through a drop down console. The avatars are a modified MD3 format with the addition of eye movement. When the eye tracker is in use, the eye movement of the avatar matches the eye movement of the subject! Lighting and shadows in the scene are dynamic, where everything is capable of casting a shadow onto everything else.
